The Sacred Ancient Capital of Sri Lanka
Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka's most sacred and historically significant cities, known as the island's first ancient capital. Founded over 2,000 years ago, the city became the heart of early Sri Lankan civilisation, Buddhism, royal architecture, and advanced irrigation.
The ancient city is home to some of the most important Buddhist monuments in the country, including the Sri Maha Bodhi, believed to be grown from a cutting of the sacred Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Vast stupas such as Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya, and Abhayagiri continue to stand as powerful symbols of devotion, craftsmanship, and royal heritage.
Beyond its temples and ruins, Anuradhapura reveals the engineering brilliance of ancient Sri Lanka through its reservoirs, stone carvings, monastic complexes, and ceremonial sites. The peaceful atmosphere, sacred pilgrimage routes, and UNESCO-listed archaeological landscape make it one of the most meaningful cultural destinations in the country.
