One of the World's Finest Natural Harbours
Trincomalee is a port city on the northeast coast of Sri Lanka. Set on a peninsula, Fort Frederick was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century. Within its grounds, the grand Koneswaram Temple stands on Swami Rock cliff — a popular vantage point for blue-whale watching.
The holy complex contains ornate shrines and a sacred spring. Trincomalee's natural deep-water harbour is one of the finest in the world and has been strategically significant since ancient times — contested by the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and French over the centuries.
Today Trincomalee is celebrated for its stunning beaches — Nilaveli and Uppuveli are among the most pristine in Sri Lanka — alongside thrilling dive sites, snorkelling with sea turtles, and whale-watching excursions from March to August.
